On 16 October 2026 artists of the Material Matters Collective open the second exhibition in their autumn residency at the Bridewell Gallery in Liverpool with Pneuma by John Elcock from 17-25 October 2026.

Pneuma is the second of four cantos in Material Matters' TRANSMISSIONS anthology. John will present an ambitious multi-disciplinary exhibition across the Bridewell's historic spaces using light, sound and installation to reflect on the nature of the human soul.

In his curation John takes the Magnificat, that ancient song of praise, as as a starting point for a careful interpretation of the transmission of the spirit, the 'breath' (pneuma) that is both transitory and eternal.

The exhibition will feature many new artworks created for Pneuma including the first public showing of his ghostly painting 'Niemand' but also the chance to see a work exploring deep time featured in 2015 by the European Space Agency.

The opening night will also feature the first complete recorded performance of 'A fevered auscultation of a heart's annunciation' a piece for full orchestra by composer Michael John Gerard Higgins.
