INTERMISSION: Angelo Madonna's Exhibition Opens at Bridewell Studios This Friday
Material Matters continues its TRANSMISSIONS residency at Bridewell Studios with INTERMISSION, a new exhibition by artist Angelo Madonna, opening Friday 30 October and running until Sunday 8 November 2026.
What happens in the space between departure and arrival? Between signal and silence, movement and stillness? In INTERMISSION, Angelo Madonna explores the possibilities that emerge within these suspended moments, where time, repetition and transformation become the conditions for new encounters.
The third instalment of TRANSMISSIONS, Material Matters' four-part exhibition programme, INTERMISSION considers the interval not as an absence of activity, but as a space alive with possibility. Here, the familiar processes of movement, sound and natural rhythm are reimagined as opportunities for something unexpected to emerge.
An aeroplane suspended between destinations, the endless repetition of a vinyl record's run-out groove, and a piano whose rhythm is determined by the changing tides of a river each offer a different interpretation of this state of suspension. Through these works, Madonna invites us to consider how seemingly ordinary transitions can become sites of imagination, uncertainty and transformation.
For Madonna, these intervals are never truly empty. They carry the residue of what has passed while holding open the possibility of what might follow.
"I think of Intermission as a space between departure and arrival, signal and silence, a temporary suspension within a continuous process. I am drawn to this moment of pause, not as an absence of action, but as a possibility: a moment in which something can be held, repeated, transformed or transmitted differently."
Within the wider context of TRANSMISSIONS, the exhibition offers a compelling meditation on the ways information, energy and experience move between states. Rather than focusing solely on what is transmitted, Madonna draws our attention to the spaces through which transmission occurs, and the transformations that become possible along the way.
INTERMISSION asks us to inhabit these moments of uncertainty, to recognise the creative potential of the unfinished, and to imagine what might emerge when the familiar rhythms of the world are briefly interrupted.
As Madonna suggests:
"Perhaps it is here, in this in-between, that other forms of Transmissions can happen."
