PUBLISHING

MAT MAT is the publishing imprint of Material Matters.

We believe publishing is a creative act in its own right — a way of sharing ideas, preserving stories, documenting artistic practice and creating connections between people, places and communities.

Through MAT MAT, we produce artist books, zines, journals, photography publications, poetry collections, exhibition companions and experimental printed works. We are particularly interested in projects that explore folklore, landscape, identity, ecology, memory, community and the relationship between people and place.

Our publications emerge from conversations, collaborations and creative practice. Some accompany exhibitions and events, while others exist as standalone works. Together they form a growing archive of contemporary voices, creative research and independent publishing.

We are committed to creating thoughtfully designed publications that are accessible, affordable and rooted in the values that underpin Material Matters: curiosity, collaboration, experimentation and a deep connection to culture and place.

MAT MAT Library at Nettle

As part of our commitment to independent publishing, we have partnered with Nettle Café in Port Sunlight to create the MAT MAT Library — a curated collection of books, artist publications, zines, poetry, photography and creative writing.

The library provides a permanent space where visitors can discover independent publishing, explore the work of artists and writers, and engage with ideas that might not always find a place on mainstream bookshelves.

We are incredibly grateful to Nettle for supporting the project and helping us champion artist-led publishing. The library will continue to evolve throughout 2026 as new publications are released and more artists become part of the growing MAT MAT community.

Together, MAT MAT and Nettle are creating a space where creativity, conversation and independent culture can thrive.

Book: Drawings by Silvia Battista. Poetry by Andrea Lioy
Words and drawings intersecting to reflect on the fate of mythological figure of Icarus.

"Icarus' Dream" is a visual interpretation of the mythological story of Icarus. Fascinated by the symbolic meaning of this figure I drew and animated an imaginary and metaphorical journey of its fall by interpreting it as a shamanic journey into Alice's hole.
