SPACE IS THE PLACE
ACT 2: A TRANSFIGURED MOVEMENT IN TIME
In this multimedia art and film experience MATERIAL MATTERS artists Patric Rogers and Angelo Madonna explore concepts of psychogeography and psycho-magic through a series of conceptual artworks and film.
Space is the Place / Act 2 encouraged the viewer to consider how we as human beings connect aspects of our conscience to memories, associations, myth and folklore in the landscapes that surround us.
“Art looks like an object but it isn’t one; it’s a process, a happening, an event, an experience” said author, Jeanette Winterson. This sentiment epitomises the exhibition and what brought it into being. In exploring the concepts of psychogeography and psychomagic, the artists hope it will be a trigger for viewers to ponder how we connect to the landscapes we inhabit. It’s a thought-provoking experience.”

TIDE COMES IN / TIDE GOES OUT (2019)
Angelo Madonna
Is a sound installation that connects an old piano soundboard to the continuous up and down movement of the tides around the Hilbre Island and the River Dee. The soundboard is controlled by an Arduino hardware encoded with the data of the tide table of the area. The result is a constant sound reminder of the cyclical motion of the oceanic tide
SONIC ACT(2019)
Angelo Madonna
Is a suspended and oscillating light over a selenium cell. The selenium cell is wired and connected to an audio mixer and then amplified. The relation between light and selenium cells creates a sound landscape made of layered white noises. Paradoxically, this highly artificial, sonic environment produces in time an experience that resembles outdoor maritime atmospheres.
A TRANSFIGURED MOVEMENT IN TIME
FILM. 30 MINS (2022)
Written and Directed by Patric Rogers and Angelo Madonna.
In A Transfigured Movement in Time the artists explore the effect/affect of psycho- magic performances and psycho-geographical practices on both the practitioners and their audiences. Throughout the film, the performers move through an ancient landscape filled with memories, associations, myth, and folklore.
Hilbre Island on the Wirral serves as muse to the conceptual exploration of the need for meaningful connection with nature, history and the landscapes we inhabit. Through a series of rituals designed by the artists, the performers are guided to engage with symbolic, embodied gestures; to give themselves to the moment; and co-create with the Island as a responsive cluster of living entities.
The artists invite you to make time, to sit and make yourself comfortable, encouraging you to immerse yourself in the performers’ experience on Hilbre, for the entire duration of the film.
RITUAL 1: UNDO
Mixed media and textural rubbings on canvas
A canvas traced by the remains of the first collective ritual performed during the film ‘A Transfigured Movement in Time’. It represents the beginning of the journey performed by the twelve participating artists.
A set of residues on canvas created during the second ritual of the film. It combines symbolic imagery from the tarot deck Rider Waite, depicting both death and the hanged man. It represents the end of a cycle, the metamorphosis of the self and the value of surrendering in conditions of self-growth and development.
RITUAL 2: SURRENDER
Mixed media, charcoal and water on canvas
RITUAL 3: TRANSFIGURATION
Charcoal and mixed media on canvas
A series of human tracings on canvas created during the third ritual performance from the film. The work symbolises the traces and memories imprinted on the material world by our passages and activities. It is a celebration of harmony and unity and the connection that we could achieve with ourselves and the world around us.
