Inspired by the 14th-century Arthurian tale Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the Into the Wyld project blossomed into a cultural and ecological exploration rooted in myth, landscape, and contemporary art. Centred around the Wirral, referred to in the poem as “the wyldrenesse of Wyrale”, Into the Wyld brought together artists, scholars, and local communities - exploring how ancient stories have the capacity to help shed light on today’s environmental and social challenges.
Material Matters’ residency featured three themed exhibitions: NATURE, CHIVALRY, and SPIRITUALITY. The public programme WEAVERS featured an inspirational line-up of talks, poetry readings, performances, a symposium, audio walk and artist conversations.
Into the Wyld:Re-imagining Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is the comprehensive official catalogue record of the project, featuring vivid visual documentation from each exhibition plus exclusive work in progress shots and documentation from the artists. It also includes a series of specially commissioned essays, new creative writing, poetry, and full transcripts of selected performances from the WEAVERS programme.
The first edition of this book has been designed in a folio format of six separate works, hand bound and numbered in a beautiful production by the artists of Material Matters. This strictly limited edition of 150 copies will retail at £35 but guests to the launch event on the 13th September 2025 can benefit from a special early bird price of £25.
The launch event for will also include a re-screening of selected video works specially created for the exhibitions and a live performance of Bod_j_ect by Material Matters artist Angelo Madonna.
Into the Wyld was produced in partnership with Wirral Borough of Culture 2024 and Liverpool Hope University. For 2025 we thank Patrick Kirk-Smith and the Independents Biennial for supporting the launch of Into the Wyld:Re-imagining Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
