Hilbre and I

I’ve been underestimating just how intense these past few years have been and how much they’ve worn on me physically. Since launching our book Into the Wyld, I’ve deliberately taken a step back, though I haven’t been completely still—several projects still call for my attention. My residency on Hilbre Island, a place that means a lot to me, was pushed to next spring. That delay actually came as a relief, giving me the winter months to pull back, dive into new gear, dig into research, and reignite my creative spark.

This summer, between projects, I had the privilege of working with the British Art and Design Association (BADA), capturing the unique artistic activities happening on Hilbre Island. Over the season, BADA has been building a groundbreaking interdisciplinary lab where art and science come together seamlessly. With my camera in hand, I gave been making regular trips to the island, trying to document the evolving conversation between these fields. What started as a commission for promotional footage has grown into a rich archive a vivid visual exploration of where art, science, and nature intersect in creative partnership.

Seeing such diverse, dynamic creative processes has been deeply inspiring. Connecting with the artists and watching their collaborative work unfold has revealed the incredible possibilities that emerge when disciplines meet. Now, I’m beginning to shape a film that weaves it all together. It’s a big leap into unfamiliar territory, but I’m finding my voice in the work. Above all, it’s an exciting experiment and a chance to reconnect with the island—the Mother, Hilbre—once again.
